Re: Brace yourself--a positive post about Gate City
I fully agree with you. My son played basketball against GC and my daughter played volleyball and basketball against them They both looked forward to and dseaded playing them. My daughter(Tammy) always played her best against them.Their coaches always came to her and told her good game as well as the players. It was mutual respect. I always enjoyed watching them play. There have been some good games between Clintwood and Gate City and although we hate to admit it we were more often than not on the losing side. But there were so many times that almost beating them let us know just how good we were or weren't. So good luck to Gate City and also to Coeburn Some fine folks there in Coeburn too.

I know that often on here that a lot of people attack Gate City. Well for most of their time back in the LPD, they have been the front dog. Not just in football, but it seems in most sports. Many of the Gate City faithful have on more than one opinion sent private messages, not just to me, but to others and said that hey they were realistic, they had a great run of athletes here for a couple years, boys and girls, but they knew that they would come back to the pack (so to speak) in a lot of sports. It wasn't that they would stink or anything but that there would be a few bad or lean years mixed in.
At the beginning of the year, or at least early in the year, many of the regulars said that they were down, this was one of the worst GC teams that they had seen in awhile, etc. I don't think many of us believed them. I did believe they were down, but honestly didn't think that it would be as far down as they thought. I give them credit for being pretty honest (although I still dont think that they were that bad, it was a snowball affect, and some bad injuries, losses, all compunded and made things seem worse or end up worse than it would have under other circumstances). The thing is we have all been there, just the last several years, it seemed that when something bad happened, Gate City was able to plug in someone just as good or better. This year, they didn't have the 3 levels of Hell for lack of a better word
One thing that I will say, for the most part, the Gate City football players and coaching staff has always been pretty classy. A few things here and there might have set off people off or wronged people, but honestly they conducted themselves for the most part to a pretty high level and respresented the district well.
I'm sure that next year, in the new district, that Gate City will rise again and be one of the top teams. I wish them well, and hope that their fans, especially the fairweather ones learned something from this year. To the true fans who show up every week, no matter good or bad. i commend you. Its hard to go out and see a down year, but you deserve the right to be proud when they do right the ship.

I think I was the main one saying this at the begining. Even got some flack from some of my fellow fans for saying it. And I will also go on record saying that if there are no changes before next year it may be another bad year. Those kids really need to hit the weight room come January and hit it hard! You could tell they just couldnt hold up to decent opponents. These kids will need alot of work!
This new district will be extremely hard to win and in my opinion may be the toughest disttrict in Region D in the coming years. I mean if GC gets back to where they should be, Lebanon stays tough and VA High gets a good spurt it can be something. Not to mention Lee High who I think will be strong again in the next couple of years. This District has the potential. I think it will be neck and neck between Clinch Mountain and Lonesome Pine.
But all in all Rock that was one of the best posts I have seen you make in awhile!
And Clayman you are more than welcome to come sit with me at any game when we play you guys. I know some fans are awful but not all are like that. You can sure bet I'm not like that and never will be. Hey I'll even buy you a hotdog and a drink!

Re: Brace yourself--a positive post about Gate Cit
definetly gotta say that i hate to see GC leave the LPD.. same for Coeburn. Both teams have always proved tough competition in one sport or another.. i played against some of the great GC basketball teams.. always pushed us to play at the top of our game.. i noticed the same in football games that i attended as well.. always seemed to be tough games, lots of big hits and everything... Wish both you and Coeburn the best in the years to come..
